My system running win xp os was infected by virus and I used anti virus to remove it. Since then each time I boot up my system and I want to browse the Internet the error message will appear “explorer.exe” can not be found etc. what can I do resolve the error?

Tried fixes I could find on the net and none seemed to work. I decided to try the HP Recovery (this is kept on a partition, HP no longer supplies disks) it said it is supposed to leave user data intact, I figured it was like a over top XP install. Well it didn’t fix the proplem and now when I look at the drive (I’m booting Bart PE) I don’t see my user folder in documents and settings. HP_Administrator folder is gone, there is just Default User and All Users. I know I’ll have to format reload, but is there any way to recover some of those files (i have a backup, but its over a month old). I tried a free undelete tool but it didn’t find any of those files. Help anyone know what the HP recover does to those user fies? I thought I saw i say it was backing up the user documents, can’t find them and the drive space used is a lot smaller now.
