Does Changing The Operating System Overcome The Problem Of Blue Screen Of Death?

My current OS is Windows Vista Starter, and since I upgraded my RAM to 1,5 GB, my PC kept displaying BSOD and restarted itself.
I am a student, and I have some “economical problems” to purchase an original OS license. So I’ve been thinking of switching to Ubuntu, which is a free open-source OS.
Does by switching to another operating system, in this case Ubuntu, my PC will not crash again?
