  • Is There Any Operating System Whether Linux Or Windows Or Any Other That Runs Directly.?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 Jason 4 comments

What I Am Looking For Is A Operating System With Basic Necessities And Does Not Require Installation And Can Run Directly From A Cd OR DVD. Which Means I Can Run The Same Disk On Any Computer Without Needing To Install It, Just By Simply Booting Into It. Is There Any Such OS. I Had Heard That Many Linuxes Could Do So. Any Links OR Useful Info????

    • There are many Linux Live CD’s:
Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Knoppix, Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux and many more.
You could also try UBCD4Win which uses your Windows installation discs to create a bootable version of Windows contained on a disc.

    • Hi There,
There are a lot of “live CD” linux distrubitions out there. I have tried several of them and the one I like best is Freespire (based onLinspire) but this is a free version.
With all the linux distrubitions you will have “issues” Your scanner may not work. The printer will probably print but you won’t have all the printing options. Your wireless adapter may or may not be supported. The media players will not play all the formats you expect and they may be “jerky”.
You can download and burn a CD but it will take a couple of hours (even on a fast internet connection).
Once the ISO image is downloaded you need to use a free burner application ( like burn cdcc or iso burn) to make your bootable CD.
You can also order a free CD ( it takes a week or two to receive or you can a purchase a CD for aboyt $ 10- or so).
If you have “dial up” order a CD. If you have DSL or cable modem and two or three hours go ahead and download and make your own.
I have tried, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Freespire, Fedora, Mandriva, Open SUSE, Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux, Mephis, (that’s all I can remember).
Freespire, Fedora and Open SUSE were the best. They have good usability, you can easily change your desktop, you can “mount” all your drives to open or save files (even with the live CD). Ubuntu and Kubuntu make it difficult to open or save anything unless you install the linux.
Puppy linux is a small linux distro (39 to 79 megabytes) that you can download and run “live” But it does have some “bugs” especially when saving or shutting down your computer afterwards. You have to hold in the power button to shut down your computer.
Anyway I would have to recommend ordering a Freespire live CD (link below)
      Hope this helps
      Al

when you insert the cd don’t proceed to the installation wizard, just choose go to the graphic mode or something like that.
