Posted on June 29th, 2009 2 commentsI am about to send my seagate passport external hard drive off to the seagate data recovery lab. how much can I expect to spend to get my data back? it’s not totally ruined or anything, no water damage, the lights come on, but it wont “talk” to my computer, it’s 160 GB and full. what do you think? I am usinghttp://www.i365.com/data-recovery/index…. but i can’t wait to find out how much it will cost me.

You can ask them to provide a quote before proceeding.
It all depends what is wrong and how bad the damage is. Typically data recovery from a dead (non-spinning) mechanism will run $500 and up. -

Hold the phone! Check into this terrific application before you do that: ‘Spinrite’ by Gibson Research. It fixes many HDD problems and /or recovers data. Google for reviews, or go to the GRC.com website for further details. About $70US last I heard.
